Al Safat Square, also known as Deera Square, is the main square of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The square contains a big open market area and a few surrounding coffee shops. Many national celebrations are held in this square. It also connects the two major historical sites of Riyadh: the Al Masmak Palace Museum on the east end and the Grand Mosque on the west end.
The square is also one of the last places on earth where public executions still take place. It is sometimes called Al-Safaa Square or Justice Square, and colloquially the "Chop Chop Square". On Friday afternoons after the big mosque gathering of prayers, police and other officials would clear the area to make way for the execution to take place.
