Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Brightly lit by numerous large billboards and digital-screen advertisements, it stretches 5 street blocks from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. A true icon for the world's most cosmopolitan city, Times Square is one of the world's busiest pedestrian areas and sometimes referred to as "the Crossroads of the World", "the Center of the Universe", and "the Heart of the World".
Times Square is also the hub of the Broadway Theater District and a major center of world's entertainment industry. It is the site of the annual New Year's Eve Ball Drop, a tradition dating back to 1907. About one million people crowd Times Square for the New Year's Eve celebrations, more than twice the usual number of visitors the area usually receives daily.
