Aguas Calientes, which means Hot Waters in Spanish, is nowadays most often referred to as Machu Picchu Pueblo or Machu Picchu Town. It is located deep in the Urubamba River Valley, accessible to tourists only by train.
Aguas Calientes is known for its thermal baths and as a gateway to the nearby Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. It is the closest access point to the historical site of Machu Picchu which is 6 kilometres away or about a 1.5 hours walk. There are many hotels and restaurants for tourists, as well as the central Mercado Artesanal, a craft market.
