Angkor Wat

Things to do in Siem Reap | Siem Reap Province | Cambodia

Angkor Wat is a huge Buddhist temple complex located in northern Cambodia. It was originally built in the first half of the 12th century as a Hindu temple. Its name, which translates to “temple city” in the Khmer language of the region, references the fact it was built by Emperor Suryavarman II, who ruled the region from 1113 to 1150, as the state temple and political center of his empire.

Spread across more than 400 acres, Angkor Wat is said to be the largest religious monument in the world. It is a UNESCO site and is the main tourist attraction of Cambodia. Angkor Wat has become a symbol of the country, even appearing on its national flag.

Traveler Notes

Built during the reign of King Suryavarman II, roughly between 1113 AD and 1150 AD, as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, Angkor Wat gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.

Designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the gods of Hindu mythology, Angkor Wat is considered the the largest religious monument in the world today.

Best Time to Visit. Do wake up before dawn to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat and then come back between 11AM-3PM for less crowds and a more quiet experience.

This was the absolute highlight of this trip. I have dreamed about seeing this place in person for years and it’s still hard to believe that I actually went there! The sheer size of this temple blew my mind. I didn’t realise how tall the structure would be either (Descending the stairs from β€˜heaven’ made me freak out just a little).
