On the northwest side of the port of the city of Chania, the Venetians built the Firka Fortress (Revellino del Porto), a fortress capable of preventing any enemy danger to the port. Its construction began around the middle of the 16th century. and was completed a few years before the fall of the city to the Turks in 1645.
Today the Fortress offers great views of the scenic harbor and lighthouse. It is a popular spot for watching sunset over the Aegean Sea. The Fortress also houses the Maritime Museum of Crete where one can learn all about the naval history of the Mediterranean.
