Fjaðrárgljúfur is a magnificent and massive canyon in south east Iceland, up to 100 meters deep and about two kilometers long. The canyon has steep walls with the winding Fjaðrá river flowing through it. The formation of the canyon is believe to date back to the cold periods of the Ice Age, about two million years ago. It was created by progressive erosion by flowing water from glaciers through the rocks and palagonite over millennia. To protect the fragile environment of the canyon from over-tourism, Iceland authorities close the canyon to visitors from time to time. One such incident took place in May 2019 after the skyrocketing influx of tourists after the canyon appeared in a music video by Justin Bieber.
