Opened in 1931, Prague Zoo is one of the oldest and the most visited zoological garden in the world. The zoo is home to around 5000 animals, comprising over 680 species of birds, mammals and reptiles. The animals range from penguins to lions, tigers and elephants. Markhor and Ibex are superbly held in mountain enclosures, while giraffes roam around a huge valley.
The zoo is laid out in zones, with names such as African Savanna, Elephant Valley, the Plains, Northern Forest and the Indonesian Jungle. The grounds stretch to over 69 hectares, from a lush river valley to a steep rocky escarpment to rolling meadows. The views from the highest points are spectacular.
