Things to do in Versailles | Île-de-France | France

The Palace of Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from 1682 (under Louis XIV) until the start of the French Revolution in 1789 (under Louis XVI). From the 19th century onwards, the Estate of Versailles has become a museum spreading more than 800 hectares, composed of the Palace, the Gardens, the Park, the Trianon estate and several other historic buildings.

Containing over 60,000 works illustrating 5 centuries of French History, the collections at the Palace of Versailles span a very broad period. The collections reflect the dual identity of the Palace, as both a palace occupied by the kings of France and the royal court, and later a museum “dedicated to the glories of France,” inaugurated by Louis-Philippe in 1837.

Located only 20 kilometres southwest of the centre of Paris, the Palace of Versailles is a popular attraction for travelers to Paris.

Traveler Notes

After the Eiffel Tower, Chateau de Versailles is the most popular attraction in France. Evoking so much history, the palace gives an amazing insight on the lavish lives of former French royalty. Beyond its extravagance and beauty, just walking along the same corridors and gardens that Queen Marie Antoinette used to before she was carried away by the mob and put to death by guillotine is a very surreal experience.

Get Around. There’s a tram that goes around the palace should you ever get tired of walking. Its €4 a for a single ride

Did a guided tour of Versailles. The ceiling paintings are astounding and the rooms are so pretty. The tour however was super long and I wouldn’t recommend unless you are really into the history of the palace and the time. Would probably be better to just buy a ticket and look around yourself at your own pace. Tickets sell out well in advance though
