THE PINK LAGOONS
More of the lesser known locations in Oman, there are couple of Pink Lakes & Lagoons around the Sultanate.
This one in specific is located in the middle of the country, in Al Wusta Governate next to a small town called Al Hakil and is probably the hardest to get to due to its remote location. It is roughly about 500 KM / 6 hours drive away from Salalah; and 750 KM / around 7-8 hours drive away from the capital Muscat.
I personally did the one from Salalah which yes is still long but definitely worth the adventure as the coastal road offers scenic views and interesting landmarks on the way; and finally wanted to really see if those lagoons were real.
And yes they are – PINK!
At first glance and depends on the angle you see a faded type of pink, but with the right position and sun reflection the intensity of the color gets stronger.
At the time i visited it was in the middle of summer, with really strong heat and high temperatures which i guess helps with the water evaporation, so most of them were somehow on the dry side; but still cool to see it regardless in ones own eyes. I was even able to walk across one of them as there are couple of these lagoons scattered around this spot. You just need to drive along the beach to cross one after another [4x4 needed otherwise on foot].
The first 2 are the most Pinkish and the contrast they offer with the sandy beach and the blue colors of the beach in the background is sensational.
Unfortunately, there was a lot of trash in the are and in the lagoons which is the not a pleasant surprise. I hope people can respect the environment more.
The recent studies executed by Sultan Qaboos University specified the reason for pink color was basically because of algae type known as Dunalilla Salina which has high degree of salt concentrations and have high concentration of B Carotene that have several bacteria within the lake such as Bacillus Subtllis, Bacillus Mwgaterium & Halobacteria.
